200 episodes later… this is why I still homestead

Hey Reader,

Today is a really special one—we are celebrating 200 episodes of The Homestead Challenge podcast.

I truly cannot believe it.

When I first started this whole thing, I never imagined it would turn into a blog, a podcast, a community, and this beautiful little corner of the internet where we can talk about sourdough, gardens, raw milk, ferments on the counter, seasonal overwhelm, and why we still choose this slower way of life—even when we’re tired.

In today’s episode, I’m answering a few questions about my own homesteading experience: how I got started, what I thought homesteading had to look like, how my definition has changed, and why I still think it’s worth it.

And honestly? My answer keeps coming back to peace.

Peace in knowing where our food comes from.
Peace in having a few skills tucked away.
Peace in walking through the garden, even on the messy days.
Peace in knowing that homesteading doesn’t have to look perfect—or look like anyone else’s version online.

For me, homesteading looks like living in the city on a quarter acre, growing what I can, sourcing what I can’t, making some things from scratch, buying the occasional garbage snack, and being okay with the balance.

So if you’ve ever felt like you’re not ā€œhomesteadyā€ enough, I hope this episode changes your mind.

You don’t have to do it all.
You don’t have to learn everything at once.
You don’t have to wear the dress, milk the cow, bake the bread, can the harvest, ferment the cabbage, and raise the chickens all in the same week unless you want to.

Start with what brings you peace.

That might be a garden bed.
A local farm pickup.
A pantry shelf.
A loaf of bread.
A jar of tea herbs.
A few better swaps in your home.

That counts.

Thank you for being here for 200 episodes. Whether you’ve been listening since the beginning or you just found me recently, I’m so grateful you’re part of this little no-pressure homesteading world.

I cannot wait for all that's to come with you here by my side.
